Freezing for long-term storage of soybean seeds

Overall comments:

Soybean seed can be frozen for long-term storage. We have successfully frozen and germinated seed for over 15 years, with no measurable loss of viability, at both -20 and -80ºC. The procedure is very simple, using small Tupperware containers that contain:

  • A layer of Drier-rite on the bottom
  • A layer of seeds on top
  • A piece of filter paper to separate the two

After placing the seeds in the container and closing the lid, they are allowed to equilibrate for a few days at room temperature before placing in the freezer.
