Strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa

In the 1700's, the French collected specimens from around the world, establishing many in the Paris Botanical Garden. Among the plants collected and planted in the garden were Fragaria virginiana (left) from eastern North America, and F. chiloensis (right) from western South America. It was in the Paris Botanical Garden where these two hybridized with each other, giving rise to the modern strawberry in 1766.
